2.8MVA Dual String Power Upgrade

2.8MVA Dual String Power Upgrade

BRIEF

Complete a Turnkey design & delivered power upgrade project taking this site from a single 1MVA site to a dual 2.8MVA resilient site suitable for Data Centre growth.

Based on the engineering excellence and vision brought to the tender phase of this project, UNG was appointed as Principal Contractor for this development on a Design & Build basis. The existing site was a multifunctional building comprising 7 Digital TV and Broadband routing centres, corporate offices, and a large distribution centre.

This development was the first phase of a 20MVA site roadmap, which will eventually see 9 additional 1MVA Data Centres constructed, providing a long-range growth plan for the site. Phase 1 involved transforming the existing single power string to a new concurrently maintainable A&B solution, comprising 2 x 2.8MVA 11kV transformers, 2 x 4000AMP Main Switchboards, and the addition of 1 x 2MVA standby generator and associated sync panel to operate alongside existing as an N+1 standby generator arrangement.

As the site is a live broadband and TV routing site, maintaining the existing infrastructure was critical to ensure business continuity for our client. The detailed design was contingent on this requirement, leading our design team to provide a solution allowing for complete overbuilding of the power infrastructure before migrating services. To create the space needed for the new power service, we constructed several new power rooms and relocated 25 employees by fitting out new offices in a different location within the building, migrating the staff seamlessly over a weekend.

Upon completion of the power upgrade works, we conducted a rigorous Integrated Systems Testing process to ensure all controls were proven and confirm that systems could recover from numerous failure scenarios, as well as validate short-term paralleling via G59 synchronisation prior to migrating the existing site load.
