BRIEF
Looking for a turnkey design and build partner, the client appointed UNG to complete a site audit and feasibility study with focus on resilience, compliance and efficiency to support a large network growth demand. The client had an immediate requirement to support the deployment of high-density growth and a future requirement for further projects including the collapse of local hub sites to accommodate up to 1.5MWe IT over 200 new racks positions.
The existing two-storey building comprised of 1nr 250kWe ground floor technical room, power room and a series of small offices to the front of the building at ground and first floor level.
Pre-construction audits were carried out by UNG's experienced design team, which highlighted inefficiencies in airflow due to incorrect rack applications and poor air management strategies, meaning the deployment of higher density applications within this legacy data centre were problematic. This, coupled with the site being supported by only a single power string and serviced by obsolete DC Power/Cooling Systems were multiple reasons the client had for developing this site with business growth, a resilience increase, F-Gas Compliance and Energy Efficiency high on their agenda.
After detailed discussions with the client our data centre design engineers understood the technical requirements, business drivers and constraints associated with the project. The data centre design produced by UNG was split into 3nr phases, which would eventually see the development of 4nr new state of the art Data Halls, Centralised Tier 3 Chilled Water Cooling System and dual 2MVA Power String. The complete project included:
1. Technical/Room Build to Ground and First Floor
2. Heavy Duty Goods Lift
3. 2MVA Dual String HV to LV Platform
4. 2Nr Standby Diesel Engines
5. Dual 500kWe UPS Systems
6. Dual 300kWe DC Systems
7. Centralised Tier 3 Chilled Water Perimeter & In Row Low PUE System
8. Hot Aisle Thermal Containment including Perception Lighting
9. Water Leak Detection Systems
10. Fire Suppression & Detection Systems
11. Modbus IP & SNPMP Real Time Data Platform
12. DCIM Power & Environment Management Dashboard
The project has helped reduce business risk and deliver readily available capacity for growth in both optimised legacy areas of the facility and in dedicated high density, high efficiency zones whilst providing compliance. The re-developed facility will enable the client to continue to support business growth in the area for the foreseeable future.
